What Is ROAS? Return on Ad Spend Explained

By Mario Antonini·

What is ROAS? ROAS (return on ad spend) is the metric that measures how much value a campaign generated for every unit of currency spent on media. The basic formula is value generated ÷ ad spend: a ROAS of 3, for example, means every dollar spent on ads brought back three dollars in value.

Why ROAS depends on real tracking

ROAS is only reliable if the “value generated” that goes into the math is real, not an estimate based on clicks. In a Telegram funnel, that means measuring actual value (a paid subscription, or a deposit in iGaming and binary options operations), not just counting clicks or channel entries as a stand-in for revenue.

In Track4you, that value comes through Integrations (Pro and Enterprise plans): the sportsbook, casino or broker returns the FTD or deposit amount in the postback, and the conversion goes to the pixel with it, the Deposit as Purchase and the FTD as the custom event FTD. It’s that value, not the click, that gives you a ROAS that reflects revenue.

There’s no time limit on Track4you’s side: even a deposit made weeks after the click goes to the pixel with its value and becomes a signal for the algorithm. But the ROAS that Ads Manager shows per campaign only adds up the conversions Meta credits within its own attribution window (by default, 7 days after the click or 1 day after a view). Anything that arrives after that stays out of the ROAS in the report, even though it happened.

See the Telegram subscriber CPL guide to understand why CPL alone doesn’t tell the whole story, and the iGaming S2S postback guide to see how a deposit amount reaches a campaign’s ROAS report.

ROAS isn’t the only metric that matters

A good ROAS over a short period can hide high churn (subscribers who leave quickly) or a dependence on a few very high-value customers. Look at ROAS next to retention: the main guide to tracking Telegram conversions explains why the channel exit event also matters in that math.

An example of a distorted ROAS

Two campaigns can report the same initial ROAS if both count “channel entry” as the value event, even if one brings subscribers who stay and convert and the other brings people who leave within a few days. ROAS only reflects reality when the value used in the calculation comes from a real conversion event (a paid subscription, an FTD), not from a stand-in like a click or a raw entry.

See the Telegram subscriber CPL guide for real cost ranges by vertical, and how to combine CPL with ROAS to decide whether a campaign is really worth scaling.
