What Is S2S Tracking? Server-to-Server Explained
S2S (server-to-server) tracking is a communication model in which one server notifies another directly, via an HTTP call, without relying on anything running in a user’s browser or device along the way. It’s the opposite of client-side tracking, which depends on a script running on the device of the person being tracked.
Where S2S shows up in conversion tracking
It’s the mechanism behind the postback: when a sportsbook, casino, broker or payment platform reports that an event happened (registration, FTD, redeposit), that notification is an S2S call. The operator’s server tells the listening server directly, without going through any browser.
In Track4you, S2S runs in both directions:
- Integrations (platform → Track4you): every click on an integration’s tracking link gets a unique
click_id, which is added to the platform’s sign-up URL. When the conversion happens (registration, FTD, deposit), the platform calls the integration’s postback URL (a server-to-serverGET) returning thatclick_id, and Track4you sends the conversion to your pixel. - Postbacks (Track4you → your system): Track4you notifies your CRM or automation (n8n, Make) of every funnel event — page view, button click, channel entry and exit — with a JSON
POST.
It’s also what makes CAPI (Meta’s Conversions API) possible: instead of the Pixel firing an event via JavaScript in the browser, the backend of an app, bot or tracking tool sends the event straight to Meta, server to server.
Why it matters
S2S communication is more resilient to ad blockers, browser restrictions and lost sessions than client-side tracking, because it doesn’t depend on anything happening on the converting person’s device. That’s exactly why, on Telegram, where there’s no browser once the person is inside the app, all real conversion tracking depends on S2S.
A typical Telegram funnel shows it in practice: the person clicks your ad, lands on your bridge page and taps the button, whose funnel entry link takes them to the channel. When they enter, the tracking bot (an admin of your channel) detects it, the entry is attributed to the original click within the attribution window, and it’s reported to Meta as enter_channel via CAPI. Days later, if they tap an integration’s tracking link posted in the channel, sign up and make a first deposit, the operator’s server fires a postback with that click’s click_id, and the FTD reaches Meta through CAPI as well. Neither step needs the person’s browser.
S2S vs client-side, in short
Client-side tracking (the Pixel) depends on a script running in the converting person’s browser. It works well on the web, but it loses signal to ad blockers and privacy restrictions, and in Telegram it simply has nowhere to run. S2S solves this by flipping the logic: instead of waiting for the browser to report, the backend that knows the event happened tells the destination (Meta Ads, for example) directly, with no middleman.
